In 1956 the Boston Celtics were on tap and ready to receive Bill Russell from the St. Louis Hawks... In exchange the Hawks were to receive Cliff Hagan and Ed Macauley. Now, when you look face value at this trade one of those three names jumps out and will forever be in our memory. That would be the power-house himself, Bill Russell.
Maybe St. Louis didn't realize that they were trading away a future Hall of Fame player...but in return they were receiving two future Hall of Fame players in Hagan and Macauley. So what's the big deal?? Seems sort of like a smart move at the time for the Hawks, right? Now a little bit about what the St. Louis Hawks didn't realize; they were trading away a franchise cornerstone power-house who would eventually become the winningest player in the entire history of the NBA. Though, How were the Hawks to know at the time...But it wasn't total disaster for the Hawks, just a quite skewed because they did go on to appear in two NBA Finals appearances with Hagan and Macauley and they even won one of those championships. However, the Boston Celtics won the NBA Finals 11 times in 13 seasons with Bill Russell ruling the hardwood for them! So, Was it a total *BUST* trade for St. Louis?? You be the judge…but looking at the numbers, I would have wished for Russell on my team! The numbers simply DON’T LIE!!
